The meaning of this quote is not really clear. It doesn’t make sense to me at first, but I think it actually does make sense if you read the whole poem. Throughout the poem, the speaker makes a point about how she can do anything she sets her mind to. She’s not good enough for things to happen to her.

She needs to take action and stop being lazy. And, even though she knows that she can’t control what happens to her, she still needs to try.
